How Your Support Helps

Financial Hardship Scholarships

By giving to Mainspring Academy, you’re making connections to real, passionate staff, families, and volunteers; contributing to measurable organizational progress and growth; and supporting a small community nonprofit with big dreams for the future.

The cost of raising and educating a special needs child is a tremendous strain on many families. While we accept various state funded scholarships, they often do not cover the entire cost of tuition at our school. We believe in the value of a diverse student body and the opportunity for all students to have access to the best possible educational experience.

Our financial hardship committee looks at the child’s financial and educational needs. We provide full and partial scholarships, depending on the family’s income and circumstances. This program is entirely funded by corporate and private donors. Your donation to this fund will enable an economically challenged family to enroll their special needs child at Mainspring Academy.

Classroom and Program Support

Every day, our staff works diligently to drive our mission to provide quality, individualized education in a safe learning environment where our students can thrive. We are committed to providing a rich educational experience for our students that includes academics, life skills, and various enrichment opportunities. Your contributions to this fund help to provide resources such as teaching materials, equipment, curricula, and support for related program costs. From our classrooms to our vocational, art, music, PE, yoga, there are numerous opportunities to make an impact in our students’ overall learning experiences.

Teacher Advancement and Education

We work hard to promote excellence within our teaching staff. The majority of our teachers are currently pursuing their graduate degree in special education. In support of our teachers, our goal is to offer them education and advancement opportunities that include tuition reimbursement and continuing education through conference attendance and workshops. We understand that our teachers are the key to our quality education. By giving to this fund, you’re enabling us to maintain a highly trained, cutting-edge, and enthusiastic faculty.

School Improvements and Expansion

As our school grows, our needs for campus expansions grow, too. We’re on a trajectory to become an even more vital and significant provider of quality education for those with special needs or learning challenges. Our vision for the future includes a freestanding and brand-new academic facility. By contributing to this fund, you can help us turn our vision into a reality and help many deserving students, teachers, and administrators.

Giving Tuesday and Social Media Crowdfunding

Donations from Giving Tuesday and other social media campaigns are an essential part of our annual operating budget and an easy way to support Mainspring Academy. All social media campaign donations, large and small, enable us to both maintain and enhance the programs which drive our mission to provide each student a quality, individualized education. All funds raised through your social media campaigns will provide opportunities for every aspect of our students’ overall learning experiences.

Giving Tuesday takes place on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year and Facebook also provides the opportunity for you to create a fundraiser for a chosen nonprofit on your birthday. However,  you can start your own personal fundraiser for Mainspring Academy for any reason and at any time. Facebook provides 100% of all donations to nonprofit organizations like ours and all donations are 100% tax-deductible.

Bequests are suitable for donors of any age or income level and through wills or revocable trusts.

Bequests can offer several benefits including:

  • Reduced estate taxes (depending on the value of your estate)
  • Flexibility for you to control your assets in the event of life circumstances
  • The ability to direct your gift to a specified purpose such as Mainspring’s area of greatest need, to an endowed fund for consistent annual giving, or to provide general support for the school.

In as little as one sentence, you can complete your gift. This type of donation to Mainspring Academy in your will or living trust makes a meaningful impact in ensuring that we continue our mission for years to come.

Retirement Assets

Mainspring Academy Legacy Society

Retirement plan assets are a great way to support the work at Mainspring Academy because they not only help support the mission, but they also can provide tax relief for your loved ones.

Money in an employee retirement plan, IRA or tax-sheltered annuity has yet to be taxed. When a distribution is made from your retirement plan account to a beneficiary, that person will owe federal income tax.

Consider leaving your loved ones less heavily taxed assets and leaving your retirement plan assets to Mainspring Academy to support our work. As a nonprofit organization, we are tax-exempt and will receive the full amount of what you designate to us from your plan. You can take advantage of this gift opportunity in the following ways:

  1. Name us a beneficiary of your plan. This requires you to update your beneficiary designation form through your plan administrator. Here you can designate Mainspring Academy as the primary beneficiary for a percentage or specific amount. You can also make us the contingent beneficiary so that we will receive the balance of your plan only if your primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you.
  2. With the IRA Charitable Rollover, if you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to help those we serve and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Mainspring Academy without having to pay income taxes on the funds. Although they do not qualify for a charitable deduction, retirement accounts can count towards the minimum required distribution

Life Insurance Gifts

Mainspring Academy Legacy Society

When the original purpose for a life insurance policy no longer applies — such as educating children now grown or providing financial security for a spouse — your policy can become a powerful and simple way to support our work. There are three ways to give with life insurance to Mainspring Academy:

  1. Name us a beneficiary of the policy. This gift is as simple as updating your beneficiary designation form with the policyholder. You can designate us as the primary beneficiary for a percentage or specific amount. You can also make us the contingent beneficiary so that we will receive the balance of your policy only if your primary beneficiary doesn’t survive you.
  2. Make an outright gift of an existing policy. You can name us as owner and beneficiary of an existing policy. You qualify for a federal income tax charitable deduction when you itemize on your taxes. If you continue to pay premiums on the policy, each payment is tax deductible as a charitable gift when you itemize.
  3. Make an outright gift of a new policy. You can take out a new policy and irrevocably name Mainspring Academy as the owner and the beneficiary of the insurance contract. This method may be particularly attractive for the younger donor. Whether you make one single premium payment for the policy or pay annual premiums, each payment is tax-deductible as a charitable gift when you itemize on your taxes.
